Piston Vibrators
Characteristics: Moderate life, rugged construction, linear force output
Description: A steel piston reciprocates in a cylinder housing at high frequencies and impacts on harden end plates. This simulates the blows of a hammer and causes any object attached to the vibrator to vibrate at its natural frequency. Internal porting allows the piston to reciprocate without the need for external valves other than to control air supply. Force output is linear. Frequency and force can be adjusted by varying the air pressure. Although a piston vibrator may be run continuously, piston vibrators are normally used in intermittent operations because of energy usage and vibrator life considerations.
Variation of the piston vibrator design:
- piston impacts on one end only
- piston is fitted with hard rubber tips to reduce noise of metal to metal impact
- piston reciprocates without impacting to reduce noise
- piston and housing are ported so there is only one blow each time a 3-way valve is energized
MODELS: (For pricing, click on series name or vibrator image)
- Impacting Piston Vibrators - simulates a high frequency hammer; transfers the maximum force to its mount; air usage is conservative; noise levels are high.
- Non-Impacting Piston Vibrators - quietest of the piston models, but considerable reduction in force output; non-impacting model requires at least one size larger than an impacting model to compensate for loss of energy transfer.
- Timed Impact Piston Vibrators - produces one impact at a time; frequency of impacts is controlled by built-in air timing mechanism; extremely low air consumption; lower noise exposure than continuously impacting piston vibrator.
- Knocker Piston Vibrators - these vibrators produce powerful impacts at low operating pressure; impact force can be set pneumatically and/or by mechanical means. Compressed air pushes the piston against internal spring and holds the spring in the compressed position until the supply air is suddenly released. The potential energy in the spring is then unleached, and the spring slams the piston against the strike plate.
- The "VKL-si" series impacts once every time the air supply is opened and released by an external valve. The "VKL-mi" series continues impacting as long as there is supply air. The interval between impacts is adjustable by means of a butterfly valve.

- Precision Linear Piston Vibrators - similar to non-impacting piston vibrator except tolerance between piston and cylinder is reduced to further minimize air consumption; lubricated and clean air supply required because of close tolerances.
- Extended Piston Vibrators - one end of piston extends through cylinder; exposed piston end is tapped to allow multiple weights to be attached thereby changing amplitude output; amplitude can be controlled independent of frequency.
RECOMMENDATION: Intermittent operation (4 to 8 hours/day when considering energy usage and life. For continuous duty, use the VFP, VFPL, VLB, or VOA/VOS Piston Vibrator series which are more energy efficient.
